Juvenile+Violence Emanuel Mullins Enwr 106 2/7/00 Juvenile Violence-The latest craze? Two boys at an Arkansas middle school killed four girls and one teacher in what police called a carefully planned ambush on the afternoon of Tuesday March 25, 1998. Nine other girls and one other teacher were also wounded in the attack at the Westside Middle School, located in a quiet rural area just west of Jonesboro, Arkansas. In a similar incident in Littleton, Colorado, two students, cloaked in black trench coats and armed with guns and bombs, opened fire on the morning of Tuesday April 21, 1999 at Columbine High School, killing 15 people and wounding 28 others in the worst school shooting in U.S. history. What do both of these real-life scenarios have in common? All of these crimes were committed by juveniles or young adults. What is it that ignites such violence in troubled juveniles such as the ones mentioned? Many different factors cause violent behavior. In this paper I will explore the roots of juvenile violence in order to understand why the atrocious acts in Jonesboro, Ar kansas and Littleton, Colorado were committed. Violence is not committed without a reason. Violence is the act of intentionally hurting someone. A number of reasons could lead to a violent outbreak. Individually, the more factors present in one's life, the more likely that person is to commit an act of violence. Some factors that contribute to violent behavior include: ? homes where parents are abusive or absent ? Need for attention or respect ? Feeling constantly disrespected ? Access to or fascination with guns Each of the characteristics above can be summed up into two major categories, family problems, and social problems. Social problems were present in both the Westside Middle School and the Columbine High School murders. One thing that was associated with all of the murders was bullying. Bullying is where a child or group of children keep taking advantage of the power they have to hurt or reject someone else. Some young people are bullied for many reasons, but mainly because they will not stand up for themselves. Having been victims of bullying, Harris and Klebold were constantly disrespected. He [Harris] was going after jocks. He hated them with a passion, because they always made fun of him and they always threatened him. They did it especially his sophomore year, and he just hated them. Why do some children bully? The main reason children bully is to get attention or make other people afraid of them. In 13-year-old Mitchell's case, he was a bully and was reported to have been upset because of girl problems (rejection). Another thing in common with both murder cases is that the victimizers had eas y access to guns. ?Access to guns is the biggest predictor for people committing homicides. If kids don't have guns, these kind of situations don't escalate as fast? Eleven-year-old Andrew Golden learned to shoot from his father. Prior to the Columbine High School murders Eric Harris would talk of buying guns in class. Harris talked constantly in philosophy class of buying a gun, especially since he recently turned 18-years-old. Family problems, the second major category of juvenile violence are perhaps the most prevalent cause of juvenile violence. To oversimplify it grossly, parents are not doing the jobs they used to do in terms of transmitting values to kids. The slack is being picked up by the entertainment world, whether it's television or movies or rap music or video games. On the same note, a staff psychologist referring to the Columbine High School murders states, Violent children live in homes where parents are abusive and absent. A lot of times, an absent father is a predictor for violent aggressive males. As was the case with both 13-year-old Mitchell Johnson of the Westside Middle School murders and 18-year-old Eric Harris of the Columbine High School murders. Research indicates that the one person being the most capable of changing the antisocial aggression of a boy is his biological father. Johnson's parents were divorced and Johnson rarely saw his father. 6 Tips for Writing About Live Events Writing about live events like meetings, forums and speeches can be tricky for newbie reporters. Such events are often unstructured and even a bit chaotic, so its up to the reporter to give the story structure and order. Here are tips for doing just that. 1. Find Your Lede The lede of a live event story should focus on the most newsworthy and/or interesting thing that occurs at that event. Sometimes thats obvious: If Congress votes to raise income taxes, chances are thats your lede. But if its not clear to you whats most important, interview knowledgeable people after the event to see what they think is most important. 2. Avoid Ledes That Say Nothing Ledes that say nothing go look like this: A) The Centerville city council met last night to discuss the budget. Or B) A visiting expert on dinosaurs gave a talk last night at Centerville College. Neither of these ledes tells us much beyond the fact that the town council and the dinosaur expert talked about something. This leads to my next tip. 3. Make Your Lede Specific and Informative Your lede should give readers specific information about what happened or was said at the event. So instead of the say-nothing ledes, we wrote above, get specific: A) Members of the Centerville town council argued last night over whether to slash the budget or raise taxes for the coming year. B) A giant meteorite was probably responsible for the extinction of dinosaurs 65 million years ago, an expert said last night. See the difference? 4. Don't Write About Events Chronologically This is the classic mistake made by newbie reporters. They cover an event, say a school board meeting, and write about it in chronological order. So you end up with stories that read something like this: The Centerville School Board held a meeting last night. First, board members said the pledge of allegiance. Then they took attendance. Board member Janice Hanson was absent. Then they discussed how cold the weather has been lately, and.... See the problem? No one cares about all that stuff, and if you write the story that way youll bury your lede in the 14 paragraph. Instead, put the most interesting and newsworthy stuff at the top of your story, and the less interesting stuff lower down- no matter what order it occurs in. 5. Leave Out the Really Boring Stuff Remember, youre a reporter, not a stenographer. Youre under no obligation to include in your story absolutely everything that happens at the event youre covering. So if theres something boring that youre pretty sure your readers wont care about- like the school board members discussing the weather- leave it out. 6. Include Plenty of Direct Quotes​ This is the other mistake made by new reporters. They cover meetings or speecheswhich are basically about people talkingbut then turn in stories with few if any direct quotes in them. This makes for stories that are just plain boring. Always liven up event stories with plenty of solid, direct quotes from the people who are speaking.

(2) Crimes under Special and Local Laws (SLL), which include seventeen crimes, of which the important ones are: (i) immoral traffic (1956 and 1978 Act), (ii) dowry prohibition (1961 Act), (iii) committing Sati (1987 Act), and (iv) indecent representation of women (1986 Act). It is equally important to clarify the concept of ‘violence’ against women. If we take ‘violence’ as â€Å"conduct which incurs the formal pronouncements of the moral condemnation of the community,† or â€Å"deviation from conduct norms of the normative groups†, the scope of cases of ‘violence against women’ becomes too broad. Narrowly, the term ‘violence’ has been applied to â€Å"physically striking an individual and causing injury† (Kempe, 1982; Gil, 1970), to â€Å"the act of striking a person with the intent of causing harm or injury but not actually causing it† (Gelles and Strauss, 1979), to â€Å"acts where there is the high potential of causing injury† (Strauss, 1980), and to â€Å"acts which may not involve actual hitting but may involve verbal abuse or psychological stress and suffering†. Megargee (1982: 85) has defined violence as the â€Å"overtly threatened or overtly accomplished application of force which results in the injury or destruction of persons or their reputation.† While understanding the concept of ‘violence’ and distinguishing it from concepts like ‘aggression’, ‘force’, and ‘coercion’, is both necessary and desirable, there is always the fear of getting bogged down in controversies relating to these concepts raised by various scholars. As a result, one may miss the very purpose of understanding broader aspects of the problem of â€Å"crime and violence against women†. ‘Violence’ must be recognised as a human phenomenon inasmuch as it consists of an act of one person which encroaches upon the freedom of another (Domenach, 1981: 30). Here, we consider the operational definition of violence as â€Å"force, whether overt or covert, used to wrest from the individual (the woman) something that she does not want to give of her own free will and which causes her either physical injury or emotional trauma or both†. Thus, rape, abduction, kidnapping, murder (all cases of criminal violence), dowry death, wife battering, sexual abuse, maltreatment of a widow and/or an elderly woman (all cases of domestic violence) and eve-teasing, forcing wife/daughter-in-law to go for feticide, forcing a young widow to commit sati, etc. (all cases of social violence), are issues which affect a large section of society. In the analysis of the problem of ‘crime against women’, we may focus on important issues like nature and extent of female crime in India, on identifying women who are generally victims of crime and violence, on those who are the perpetrators of crime and violence, on what motivates criminals to commit crimes or victimisers to use violence, and on measures which could contain the depersonalisation trauma of the victims.

People of their nature are fans with high expectations of their style of work. Rap music exposes a lot to the public like violence, success, braveness, motivation, and reality but it sometimes gets personal. For example, Rick Ross had problems with another rapper about money situations and their argument took the violent route. So as a hip hop artist Rick Ross had lots of guns in is video with someone tied up to a chair getting tortured and robbed in a scene with the person matching the description of his opponent, yes, it is reality but hip hop gets person which makes it real. Rappers in music videos wear big flashy chains and show money to signify their wealth which is verisimilitude. While in the same scene people are holding rifles and hand guns pointing them at the screen sharing their views of violence and braveness which is also Verisimilitude, even the person who is watching is influenced by these action as well as enlightened. Those videos express a lot and has meaning behind the scenes that are being shown. Truthfully from my point of view Caravaggio and Bernini did master their work as artist, but when it comes to specific things like verisimilitude these new artists like the ones mentioned before are giving them a run for their money. In todays world art has yet to forget the true meaning of Verisimilitude, or in other words reality, emotion, or t he since of true features in art that stands out and grabs your attention. Imagine something beautiful like a sunny day with high tempered beams grazing across your head making you sweat while in a garden planting new crops as the old ones are sprouting, and the heat gives your conscience the signal to wipe your face that in a picture would be verisimilitude. It shows feeling, emotion and life. Ones greatly before our time has accomplished this type of art but it was back in the baroque era. There were several artists who performed this type of art during this era but from my point of view only two artists in those days mastered this type of art and their names where Caravaggio and Bernini. Verisimilitude is uneasily done but surely capable of doing as Caravaggio and Bernini mastered it with painting that are popular to this day. Some of their work are hanging in museums now today proving their perfection in Verisimilitude. From one artist one painting would be described as a knowledge to the readers on how verisimilitude was really performed, as in detail the painting are broken down by what proves their art shows verisimilitude. In the early 1600s time Caravaggio painted the Supper at Emmaus. This new birth to the seventeenth century stained a unique transformation in art. Before this dramatic change mannerism existed as the predominant style, great artistic people one being Caravaggio was adapting to natural real figures. Instead of excessively high convoluted poses of well mature muscular males and females, Caravaggio made known figures that arent stiff or dead but have life, dirty clothing, vast rankled skin, and even filthy finger nails. Its Caravaggios conspicuous or prominent way in his art work that truly signifies his talent as a artist in history. Think for a second how did the two men know who the strange traveler was? How did they know it was Christ, it was by his gesture he raised his arms to bless the bread? In that motion, both disciples are quickly aware of whom he is. The two disciples reacted instantly with disbelief raising up and forcing the selves away from their chairs outstretching their arms. The innkeeper keeps his focus as he is not fazed by the motion as he is confused by it. Though they are all judged by their different gestures it shows real emotions. Caravaggios talent in showing off verisimilitude is more like looking a video with the motion other than stating a dry picture. Caravaggio get in-depth with the figures in his art work, for instance he made the disciples have rugged hands presenting hard work and are in life. The faces of all the men have wrinkles and some have facial hair showing age, and even the man whos standing has ripped clothing. His feature so men with real lives representing different sign and gestures with ware of hard work. Lying on the table is the supper. With bread, fowl, and a basket of fruit. The food represents assets of Christ like the bread that he blessed symbolized as his flesh, there is also a fowl on the plate which is mirroring death. placed on the edge of the table barely balanced with gravity is the fruit of the supper which shows breath, resurrection, and lastly rebirth. Next to the bread in the bowl is the grapes which makes wine also a symbol of Christ. The image and position of the bowl gives a viewer the illusion that you can reach out and grab it or push it back on the table, showing such emotion is verisimilitude. Caravaggio worked hard for his perfection as he was named the most famous painter in Rome. Verisimilitude should be symbolized with a high status in todays world of art. And not just one style of art any art. More reality, more emotion and effectiveness gives someone a more angled view of what reality and truthfulness really is. If you were to ask me I fear the future without verisimilitude, it would bring destruction. We as people deserve the truth. So, to all the fakers out there who just entertain and make things believable should be a shame. Its only the truth that will set you free not lies. Verisimilitude is a statement in ones art. As said before plenty may attempt and yes, it is hard to perfect but it is not impossible to be perfected. Bernini was also a well talented and one of the best of all times artist who used verisimilitude, but in my knowledge and mind set, Caravaggio worked hard for his perfection as he was named the most famous painter in Rome. Truthfully from my point of view Caravaggio and Bernini did master their work as artist, but when it comes to specific things like verisimilitude these new artists like the ones mentioned before are giving them a run for their money.
